KCUYC Community Garden is ... Relevant

KCUYC’s community garden was recently referenced in the July-August 2011 issue of Relevant magazine. Nicole Morrow, KCUYC Public Health Coordinator, was one of the interviewees in this article (pp. 40-43) regarding local sustainability initiatives. Morrow shares how the social initiatives of urban agrarianism and sustainability are integrated with caring for the poor/hungry and celebrating God’s creation. The KCUYC community garden was also one of only 38 urban farms/gardens to be featured in the 2011 KC Urban Farms & Gardens Tour this past June.

Royals Recognition

The Kansas City Royals recently honored KCUYC’s own Chuck Sailors with their Dan Quisenberry Special Achievement Award, recognizing an individual dedicated to community service. Sailors, president/CEO of the KC Urban Youth Center, was selected for this award by members of the Quisenberry family from among dozens of other nominees from throughout the Kansas City metro. We are so proud of Chuck and thankful for his faithful leadership in guiding the Kansas City Urban Youth Center from its founding more than six years ago to today, where we continue to offer hope, community, and wholeness to youth in traditionally underserved communities!

A Beautiful Passion

Our students are directly impacted by the faithful investment of dozens of volunteers and mentors . . . just like Lindsey Snyder, one of our volunteers at our Rosedale Ridge site: "I have learned that even when I cannot see the immediate results of my time and effort, I am still needed and my being there will eventually make a difference ... a difference worth every once of energy I put toward it. I have realized how beautiful my passion is -- and that only God could place such an awesome desire in my heart!" Do you resonate with Lindsey's testimony? We are so grateful for the volunteers, mentors, and teachers who support the KCUYC students with their time, talent, and treasure. Will you join us? Volunteer today!

Student Leaders Assess Community Bikeability

As a component of a new cycling partnership, KCUYC students are learning about bicycle history, safety, and maintenance, as well as conducting assessments of local streets and neighborhoods. By encouraging involvement and cycling among urban youth, KCUYC hopes to increase physical activity and mobility among the youth it serves. Stay tuned for more information on how the students' assessments of local streets and neighborhoods will impact future KCUYC programs and city-wide partnerships.
