Breakaway 2007 –
KCUCY Students Minister to Over One Thousand People

by Monique Hollingsworth (KCUYC student)

Hello my name is Monique Hollingsworth. I am 17 years old and a part of the KCUYC’s Student Leadership Team. I would like to tell you about my great experience at Breakaway 2007*.

Breakaway began with our choir from the Kansas City Urban Youth Center performing a song in the worship service. The song blew the top off of the church! The service also included a performance by a youth group from a local church. These young women and men performed a skit to the song Everything by Lifehouse. To me, the skit sent a positive message to everyone in the audience; it illustrated that the “devil” will send all types of things your way to distract you from God…and that all we really need to do is focus on Jesus.

We spent the rest of the night at a place called PowerPlay…playing games, eating good food, making new friends and just hangin’out. At PowerPlay there was so much fun going on and such blessed spirits running around. PowerPlay gave me the opportunity to make and meet new friends.

When it was time to go I was a little sad, because I really did not want to go home. To make a long story short, I really enjoyed myself and I think I can speak for everyone who was there: “We all enjoyed ourselves!”

*Breakaway is an all-night annual youth event attended by nearly 1,000 youth in the KC metro area each November. The event is sponsored by local Nazarene churches with the intent of providing a fun event that youth can invite their peers and friends to. Breakaway always begins with a powerful worship service; this year, more than 100 students responded to the altar call as the service was ending and spent time talking with pastors and friends about the things that matter most, before engaging in the all-night “fun” even at PowerPlay. The KCUYC has hosted/planned this event for 3 years now.
