Volunteering at the KCUYC

We first got involved with the KCUYC in September of 2006 while looking for jobs to fulfill our work study requirements. We were very interested from the beginning and went there to meet with the staff and learn about the Center. We immediately knew that this was the place for us.

We are at the Center on a regular basis, helping the students with their schoolwork and reading activities. We also get the opportunity to connect with them on a more personal level during breaks and outdoor activities.

One of the things we love about the Center is the family atmosphere, and how welcoming it is. Every time we come to the Center we are greeted with hugs and smiles. The way the kids interact with us and welcome us into their lives is really uplifting. Also the way the kids work together is very inspirational because they are always willing to help one another. They truly are a supportive family that continues to grow.

We have enjoyed our time at the KCUYC so much that we invited some of our friends to spend time with the staff and kids, too, so that they can better understand what we experience and talk with us about them when we come home. We asked our friend Gianna (Procopio), who has come with us to the Center a few times, to share her experiences. This is what she had to say: “My experiences at the Kansas City Urban Youth Center have been great. The kids are so fun to work with. I look forward to returning and hanging out with everyone.”

We completely agree with Gianna and are so grateful we have had the opportunity to work at the KCUYC this year.
