Do Urban Youth Care about the Economy?
by Chuck Sailors (KCUYC CEO)
Do kids care about the economy? Do they know or feel the effects of bailouts, foreclosures, layoffs, budget crunches and buyouts? Finding out how our economic woes impact a young person at the KCUYC might be difficult at first glance, but scratch the surface and you will find moms and dads who have no jobs, a new family moving into low-income housing because their rental property was foreclosed, a student whose school enrichment programs were cut, and students who cannot find a part-time job, much less a business hiring anywhere in their neighborhood.
So do they care? Oh yes, they care. Life is a struggle in the city; but this economic crisis adds insult to injury. So how can you help? What is the KCUYC doing on the front lines every day, that offers young leaders hope, community and wholeness in times like these? Here's your answer:
The KCUYC is hiring at least 7 high school students to work on staff this semester. Your gift of $50 a week for the next 12 weeks will give employment to one of these students ($600 gift).
The KCUYC is serving over 500 meals a week to our students. Your gift of $10 a week for the next 12 weeks will provide food for our students each day ($120 gift).
The KCUYC is tutoring, mentoring, reading and providing a safe and caring environment every day for youth in low-income housing and in partnership with local schools. Your gift of $25 a week for the next 12 weeks will ensure books, tutors, teachers and needed supplies are there for these young people ($300 gift).
Would you join with us in making a difference in these days; your investment will provide care for our youth.
