New Program Funds for KCUYC young leaders this year!
by Sara Lissauer, Development Coordinator
We have recently received several new grants as well as some important grant renewals that will help us to sustain after-school and summer programming. Thank you all for giving to the KCUYC in so many ways; your generosity continues to assist us in leveraging these investments in our young leaders at the Youth Center.
General Mills Foundation
KCUYC was proud to have received a first time grant of $5000 this spring from the General
Mills Foundation. The Foundation, based out of Minneapolis, provides financial support to
nonprofit organizations that create sustainable community improvement in the areas of youth
nutrition and fitness, social services, education and arts and culture. The Youth Center‘s
garden project fit perfectly into their giving priorities for the Kansas City area. Over the
next year, KCUYC will continue to foster a year-round community garden and educate our young
people on the benefits of healthy living with the support of the Foundation.
Catholic Campaign for Human Development
Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph took on the venerable task of working to alleviate
poverty within the Kansas City area. To address this issue they started the Catholic Campaign
for Human Development to provide funding for projects that address the social, political, and
economic causes of poverty. KCUYC was encouraged to have received $5000 of these funds to support
the Re-Thinking Healthy Lifestyles program, which will offer our students the opportunity to
become agents of change within their immediate neighborhoods in bringing about healthier food
and recreation options for them and their families.
Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City
The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City renewed their support for the Healthy Choices
program for the third year in a row with a grant of $52,000. This grant will provide general
support for the nutrition, fitness, and gardening components of the after school program.
The Sprint Foundation
This summer KCUYC was thrilled to have received our first award from The Sprint Foundation to
support the after-school program in the amount of $5000. The grant will be used to support the
leadership training and educational enrichment that the after-school program will offer to our
young people this coming fall.
