The KC Urban Youth Center (KCUYC) provides out-of-school time programs for 4th – 12th grade students including:
  • homework help/tutoring
  • academic curriculum
  • keyboarding and computer programs
  • daily physical activity and recreation
  • health education & healthy snacks
  • service learning opportunities
  • gender-specific character groups

ReThink! ReThink! is our primary daily academic program at the KCUYC. It is based on a project-based learning model and integrates various academic disciplines into a semester-long project. These special projects allow us to meet students where they are. Initially, our students have chosen to tackle projects involving the clothing industry and consumerism, and creating an urban garden.

Healthy Choices for Life: Holistic health is at the heart of the KCUYC health care program. Students are led in daily physical activities such as yoga and basketball. Also we practice healthy eating habits and receive nutrition education and are served a daily healthy snack. Each element adds to the overall ability for students to make life choices.

Guy/Girl Groups: Our gender-specific character curriculum gives male and female students the opportunity to get together and talk with their peers about the difficult issues they face. These groups meet weekly, and are focused on topics chosen by the students. Each group is facilitated by caring adult mentors from the community.

Family Friday Nights: Why do we eat together? Because we are a family–of course!!! Every Friday the KCUYC family comes from all over to play and eat together. Anyone is welcome to come and enjoy engage in this time for healthy relationship building in community.

Student Leadership Team: Our Student Leadership Team offers high school students part-time employment and invaluable job and life skill training. Their job responsibilities include program planning, leading daily activities, assisting staff members, and food preparation.
