We
provide out-of-school time programs for students from 4th grade
12th grade including homework help/tutoring, recreational
activities, academic curriculum, Bible study/quizzing, daily physical
activity healthy snacks, ministry opportunities, keyboarding and
computer programs, and gender-specific character development curriculum.
We have more than 30 students regularly involved in this program
each day. The goals of this program are to holistically empower
youth to achieve academically and relationally in the future.
ReThink! is the main daily academic program at KCUYC. It is based on a Project-Based Learning model and integrates the various academic disciplines into a semester long project. This project is designed to address the tough issues that urban youth face not to be trendy, but because God calls us to be incarnational and meet young people where they are. This semester the driving question behind the project is How can KCUYC provide low income families with an alternative to expensive, clothing? After extensive research, journaling, and discussion the projects goal is to offer a creative fashion show for the community that will provide the community with viable solutions to the problem of expensive clothing as well as educating them about the clothing industry, advertising, and consumerism.
Student Leadership TeamThrough the centers Student Leadership Team high school students receive part-time employment. Their various job responsibilities include cleaning, food preparation, maintenance, weekly meetings, program planning, leading daily activities, and assisting staff members. In addition to employment, these student leaders receive invaluable job skill and life skill training.
Healthy Choices for LifeHolistic health is at the heart of KCUYC's health care program. Students are lead in daily physical activities such as dance, yoga, basketball and football. In addition to encouraging healthy eating, students are educated on nutrition topics and are served a daily healthy snack. Each of the elements of the program add to the overall ability for students to make healthy choices for life.
Worship ServiceOnce a month KCUYC hosts a student-led worship service for youth in the community. Students break up into various ministry planning teams (music, drama, outreach, preaching, dance) to plan the different components of the service. The worship is refreshing in its creativity and informality.
Incentive ProgramThis
incentive program is based on the student's honesty about their
participation during programming hours. Students give themselves
a score of 1 to 5 in order to earn points for a potential field
trip. Other students have the opportunity to respectfully offer
concerns about a students self-evaluation. This is helping
the students to understand integrity and honesty, as well as accountability
and community.
Guy/Girl Groups
This program gives our male and female students the opportunity
to get together and talk about the different issues they face with
their fellow men and women. These groups meet once a week, and are
focused on topics chosen by the students. Each group is facilitated
by adult volunteers who can provide wisdom and guidance as our young
people think through these issues.
Students meet daily for Bible study and quiz practice. Once a month the quiz team travels to meets and competes with other quiz teams. This year the team is studying Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.
